cherry blossom festival, washington dc. ~

it all started a few years ago when my brother and his wife were running a race in dc the weekend of the cherry blossom festival. when they got home, they immediately let me know that the only people out and about that early were either the runners themselves or professional photographers. oh, and i needed to come up the next year to get in on the action! :)

andrew and i finally got our act together this year and headed up to dc for a long weekend during peak cherry blossom blooms. i’m not sure where to begin, but i will say this. rob and katherine are incredible hosts. dc is an amazing city. and over 250 frames later, i am wishing i was back for more! here is a photo account of our time up there, and trust me, i narrowed down the photos big time!

dc-blog-2i don’t travel very often, so when i do, i love capturing city lights. here we are coming into dc.

dc-blog-3i know this isn’t particularly spectacular, but i wanted you to see how massive the crowd was! it was like this everywhere!!

dc-blog-4jefferson memorial.

dc-blog-5we had gorgeous weather saturday and sunday of our trip, but saturday (as you can see above) was crazy windy. the branches were going wild, so andrew had to hold this branch so i could get the shot below.

dc-blog-6thanks, hon! :)

dc-blog-8did i mention the blossoms were in peak bloom?? they were so dense!!

dc-blog-9the washington monument, of course.

dc-blog-10where should we go for lunch? i had to laugh that everyone (myself excluded) pulled out their blackberry.

dc-blog-11andrew actually grabbed this shot and it has become one of my fav. pics from the trip. i’m not sure what, but there’s something about it that i love!

dc-blog-12the white house. if you look to the left, you’ll see the washington monument. one thing we loved about dc is that everywhere you look, you see a major monument or building. so cool.

dc-blog-13on saturday we ended up walking about 10 miles, so a quick ride on the metro was definitely welcome.

dc-blog-14on our way to the naval observatory open house, we walked past several embassies. i especially loved this one for vatican city. yes, they had their own embassy!

dc-blog-15as the sun was setting, we walked past the national cathedral.

dc-blog-16

dc-blog-17katherine grabbed this shot of andrew and i–i love it!

dc-blog-18back at rob and katherine’s place, we enjoyed some homemade strawberry shortcake. rob and katherine are both amazing in the kitchen–it is such a treat to stay with them!

dc-blog-20the next morning we headed out bright and early, after a quick stop at dunkin donuts of course, to try to beat the crowds.

dc-blog-21it worked! we had an entire metro car to ourselves for several stops. while we’re on the topic, may i mention how much we loved the metro? it was our exclusive form of transportation for the weekend–no cars–and was incredibly convenient, clean, and easy to use! how do we get this in atl?

dc-blog-23world war 2 memorial.

dc-blog-24i am a fairly indecisive person, but i will have to say that this memorial was my fav. for so many reasons, one being that you had a great view of both the washington and lincoln monuments.

dc-blog-25of course, the actual structure helped, too. :)

dc-blog-26

dc-blog-27the lesser known world war 1 memorial.

dc-blog-28more cherry blossoms…and a lot less crowded early in the morning!

dc-blog-29at the sculpture garden, katherine, rob, and andrew are studying a modern piece.

dc-blog-30rob (who is in the navy) at the navy memorial. super cool memorial.

dc-blog-31train arriving at the metro station…

dc-blog-32our last morning we attempted to get into the archives to see the declaration of indepence. after waiting in line for over an hour (did i mention it was raining?), we gave up and headed up the steps to check out the front of the building. when we reached the top of the steps to the national archives, we felt like jack in the bean stalk. anyone remember that fairy tale? we felt so tiny!! check out these doors!

dc-blog-33being swallowed by the columns…

dc-blog-34since it was raining, we made union station our last stop before heading to the airport.

dc-blog-35the sounds and bustling activity at union station made for a different and fun experience. and i had no idea there were restaurant and shops inside?? i would definitely recommend stopping through here if you are in dc.

from here we headed home~

i am proud if you made it through all of these photos. we had such a great time visiting our nation’s capital and would love to make another trip up there. rob and katherine–thanks for your amazing hospitatlity and we’ll see you down here in 2 weeks!!

i heart mom packages~

with mother’s day just around the corner, i know many people are still deciding what to get to show thankfulness and honor to our moms. and if your mom is anything like mine, when asked what she wants for mother’s day her response is usually something to the effect of, “i just want all my family together.” since that’s not exactly on sale at stores, i have created a limited-edition mother’s day package that may just solve the problem. :)

i heart mom package. $75.

includes a certificate good for…

- 1 hour on-location photo session with your family
- Print-package of her favorite images (4 4×6, 2 5×7, 1 8×10)

bergs sneak peek~

where to even begin?? since about february, i have been craving color and the return of life that spring always promises. well, it turns out that the bergs were just what i ordered.  i did their shoot last week, and the day could not have been more perfect. beautiful sunlight, green grass, fun downtown area. ahh. my idea of a perfect day. not only was the weather perfect, this family was a true pleasure to document. their interaction with each other was great and their love for one another was so evident. i will go ahead and apologize now for the overload of pictures. looking through these, it was too hard to choose favorites!

berg-blog-1

we started the session off in downtown alpharetta and explored some unique side streets…i thought this building worked with the classy outfits they had chosen.

berg-blog-5

i have always loved this building, but was sad to see that main street art is no longer there~hopefully, something equally great will move in!

berg-blog-10

if you can guess where this spot is (and don’t know from me or the bergs), comment and i will definitely hook you up with some starbucks goodness.

berg-blog-11

did i mention i had been craving green grass??? lying there taking these pictures, all i could think was how lucky i am to do this for my job!

berg-blog-12

these next several deserved their own spot as lynzi’s husband, lukas, is serving overseas in the army. our prayers are with their family during this season~

those blue eyes…

berg-blog-16

so while i was taking the above pic of caleb, this is what the girls were doing above him. i had to back up and take their pic–too funny. i love what we will do to get a smile from a baby!

berg-blog-19

something about the softness in this pic speaks to me…

berg-blog-22

lynzi, you are beautiful and such a gifted mom already. the way you love on your son is such an example–keep up the great work! :)

i had a great time with all of you! thanks for including me in a great afternoon~

introducing mr. and mrs. jones~

though i primarily focus on portrait work, when a friend of a friend asked me to do her wedding, i was thrilled to accept. this wedding was an intimate collection of family and friends as the guest list totalled 25! by the end of the day, andrew and i agreed that we felt like we had been part of the guest list ourselves. what an amazing family to witness–their joy and love for each other spilled out throughout the day and it was truly an honor to document this day for them. enjoy some photos from the day~
